What the heck is this?

Check out our IPv6 announcement blog post for some background information.

Does this affect existing and new Linodes?

Nope. Not at all. No forced migrations here.

How do I get started?

New Linodes in (or an existing Linode migrating to) a facility with IPv6 support will automatically get an IPv6 address assigned.

For existing Linodes in a facility with IPv6 support, simply navigate to your Linode's "Remote Access" subtab and then click "Enable IPv6". You will be prompted to reboot your Linode.

Check out our Linode Library guide on setting up Native IPv6 Networking on your Linode (hint: it's auto-configured).

Can I get more than one IPv6 address?

Absolutely. Additional IPv6 addresses are free.

Each Linode starts off with one global IPv6 address which is assigned using autoconfiguration.

Additional 'Pools' of 4096 addresses can be assigned to your account which are bound to one datacenter. Addresses from these pools can be brought up on any of your Linodes within that datacenter. With this configuration you get IP Sharing / Failover built in. Whichever one of your Linodes responds to Neighbor Solicitation queries gets the IP. Please open a support ticket to request a Pool assignment.

We are also working on the ability to have an entire /64 subnet routed to one of your IPv6 addresses – even one of the Pool addresses, which means you can fail over the entire subnet. Stay tuned!

Are there private IPv6 IPs?

There is no need! We have designed our IPv6 accounting so that local IPv6 traffic within one facility does NOT count against your transfer quota. Use them just like private IPs.

Can I get an IPv6 only Linode?

Not yet. Linodes still come with an IPv4 address by default.

Are there IPv6 local resolvers?

Yes. They are listed on your Linode's Remote Access subtab.

What about IPv6 Reverse DNS?

Yes. You can set the reverse DNS for your IPv6 addresses just like your IPv4 addresses.

DNS Manager IPv6 glue?

Yes. The DNS Manager authoritative servers in the IPv6-enabled facilities have AAAA glue records and are IPv6 accessible.

Do I have to wait?

If IPv6 is not yet available in your facility, you can always configure an IPv6 tunnel via a tunnelbroker. Check out our Linode Library guide on Setting up an IPv6 Tunnel on Your Linode.
