I've just built a 2.6.16.1 kernel based on 2.6.16-bb1, which includes NPTL/TLS support and softints, and all the latest UML goodies. Soft interrupts is a performance enhancing patch from Jeff.

I'd appreciate some feedback before making this the default kernel.

Gentoo users need to keep in mind that the Linux Kernel no longer includes devfs, so you'll need to edit your /etc/fstab and change any devfs entries to "normal" dev entries, like so:

/dev/ubd/0 needs to be /dev/ubda
/dev/ubd/1 needs to be /dev/ubdb
etc.

Also, make sure your /etc/inittab uses tty0 instead of vc/0.

Forgive me for asking a dumb question, but where can I get my hands on the new kernel, and any recommended method of installing?

Changing kernel on a Linode:
Log in to Linode Platform Manager (LPM)
Choose 'Configuration profiles'
Choose the profile you want to run with the new kernel
In the 'Kernel' drop-down, choose 2.6.16.1-linode18
Save the profile
[Optional] On the 'Configurations' page of LPM, set your chosen profile as the default (the one your Linode will boot into in the event of an unattended restart)
Go back to the 'Overview' page of LPM
Select your chosen profile in the 'Issue a command to your Linode' drop-down (unless it's the default)
Issue a reboot command

2.6.12.3-linode14 seems nice and stable though.

I switched to 2.6.16.1, and was able to upgrad Fedora Core 3 to Core 4, which requires NPTL.

Everything seems to work, and it has been stable for about 15 minutes now, so I'm declaring the upgrade a success and deleting my backup partition with my "last known good" copy of FC3 on it.

(on second thought, maybe I should wait another 15 minutes)

The kernel seems to be working fine, however I've noticed the load average under normal (for my linode, relatively idle) conditions seems to be quite a bit higher than the 2.4 kernel. My cacti graphs show that under 2.4, the 1-minute average was around .18, but under the 2.6 kernel the 1-minute average is around .30.

I briefly tried a 2.6 kernel about a year ago and had a similar issue, though it was significantly worse -- at that time the load average for my idle linode was 1.0+.

Not sure if this is something I should worry about because performance seems about equivalent.

Heh, well, the 2.6 kernel reporting load of 1.0+ was a cosmetic bug.

It was really a load of 0.0+

That bug was fixed perhaps several months ago? It now shows up correctly.

I have been using this kernel for 17 days now without problem.

However, I too see higher than expected load averages. Load seems to stay around 0.2-0.3.

I put this down to my recent switch to Ubuntu from Debian Sarge - but it may be kernel related since I am now 2nd from bottom (top!) on ratemylinode.com
