Hi,

Which version of Ubuntu will Linode make available next? And what is the rough timeframe?

I see that 6.06 LTS is available but prefer to start with a newer version instead of installing 6.06 and then upgrading to 7.04.

I was wondering if the plan is to wait for the next LTS which would mean year 2009. It seems that every 2nd or 3rd release might be a reasonable compromise for Ubuntu on Linode.

7.04 is available now. It was pushed out last night but I just enabled it in the database.

What about Slackware?

Slackware 10.0 is what Linode.com supports, yet Slack 11.0 is the latest version. Slackware 10.0 is two versions back and the changes between then and now are significant.

Hi,

unixfool: I believe Pat is close to releasing 11.1 - and that defaults to a 2.6 kernel. Now that everything is nice and stable in the 2.6.20 strain, the newer almost-read dist would make a neat addition to Linode.

Edit: have a look at my upgrade to Slack 11 HOW-TO here:
http://www.linode.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2718

It takes about 20 mins, including download and running upgrade time.

sbender: I'm sure you meant to say "by far the most experience with Linux distribuition - since 1992" ;-)

I've been running Slackware 11.0 on linode for a while. In December Caker said an official distro was on the way....

Here's my suggested way to build a new and minimal Slackware 11.0.

Thanks, guys...I'm definitely going to attempt an upgrade soon, but I need to plan some things first (and back up the crucials).

I was trying to stick it out until 11.1 but Pat's being very particular about certain things lately. Its not that I need the latest/greatest distro version, but I'm behind the powercurve as it is (running 9.0 on my 'node). To jump from 9.0 to 11.0 then have Pat release 11.1 soon after, wouldn't bother me but I'd much rather kill all the birds with one stone, as the saying goes.

Again, thanks for the HOWTOs!
