At other ISP/hosting services, a neat feature, for those who host multiple domains, was the ability to setup one zone as a template, then clone or deploy additional zones from that template zone.

It would be nice to be able to just "clone and regex replace" against a zone to create another similarly setup zone, where the only real difference is the domain name.

Would save ALOT of time when migrating alot of domains or just creating backup environments.

Hello,

I agree with this, but there is a method to do this using the Import Zone via AXFR option. If you click on "Add a zone" then towards the bottom of the page there's a link to import via axfr. Click on it, enter the name of your existing zone and use ns1.linode.com as the nameserver...

Okay, don't know why I didn't think to try that first. :) Thanks for the fast and useful response!

Btw, glad to be back on Linode after a short hiatus. :)

Hmm.. okay, revisiting. :/

So, if I try to import it using an existing domain name already in the system, it tries to clone it as that same domain name. So, the AXFR works, but then the system errors out since it notes it already has a record for that domain name.

If I use the domain name I want the clone to be called, it fails since linode isn't authoritative. :/

An alternative I'm thinking about is to setup my own bind that contains the entries I want and just import those zones from my bind into Linode.... Or maybe just slave linode's DNS from the bind.

Any thoughts?

Unless you can come up with some reason not to, I'd go with the slave zone idea rather than manual transfers. Sure, you still have to setup the initial configuration for each zone, but when you tweak (which you will), having to redo the transfers will be a PITA.

Sidenote: you don't have make the primary bind visible to anything except the slaves, if that's a desire.

I just added a feature to clone a zone.

Enjoy,
