I have just set up a VPS here, but i have no clue how to set it up to use, I am used to cpanel and others, but not this.

First off, im using a mac, so putty is out of the question, ssh etc, so the question is are there workarounds for mac users.

Second question is is there a sort of 1, 2, 3, on the site anywhere.

thanks for baring with me as I try to figure this out, I will be looking at other hosting for my main sites, and use this with the intention of learning for a month, if i can pick it up in a month then i may switch to this wierd world in which you all live.

best
steve

How old is your Mac? Mac OS X has ssh built in, you can just ssh from Terminal. As for setup help, look in the Wiki. Or just deploy a distribution from the Linode Platform Manager and start playing.

Do you have any experience setting up and managing your own Linux box?

Hi

I have a new mac intel so that should be ok.

I looked on the wiki
http://www.linode.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_setup_your_Linode
http://www.linode.com/wiki/index.php/Debian

this seems to be the page that you refer to, but im still unsure where to start as these dont seem to address the issue for a novice.

I have set up the system and migrated over to xen
what I need to do now is set up PHP 5 and mysql

then work out how to set up a domain.
thanks for your help and quick response

steve

Either you're hitting a bad mirror, or your APT package lists are out of date. Try running apt-get update; if that doesn't help, replace ftp.us.debian.org with mirrors.kernel.org in /etc/apt/sources.list, then apt-get update

I've used ISPConfig (http://www.ispconfig.org) for years to manage multiple websites on a single server. It handles websites, email, ftp, users, and a lot more. It's also free :).

There's a complete Debian HOWTO located here: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_debian_etch
