It would be really nice to be able for like an extra $3/month run a second configuration simultaneously in a node as long as the total ram, hd and whatnot stayed within the existing limits.

Hello Will.
Not going to happen, I'm afraid to say. To run multiple instances you'll need multiple Linodes.
We're working on making the management of multiple Linodes much easier. Stay tuned for an announcement in the coming weeks.

This is an often requested feature. Unfortunately, there are more logistics involved that play into the fairness to the rest of the customers on the host.
There's more to it, but to dumb it down, ask yourself if you would want to be on a host with 80 Linode 180 plans on it?
