One feature i think would be pretty neat would be to add the ability to duplicate an existing disk image for either backup or testing purposes ( avalible disk space allowing of course )

For hosting purposes this would allow quick restores if the host became rooted. For testing purposes it would allow you to create two identical systems.

does anyone else think that this would be a good idea?

The option is already there. See the Disk Images tab in the Member's site. Make sure the image you are duplicating is not mounted when you do the duplication or you will end up with a filesystem in an inconsistant state.
