[edit] What is a Linode?
Linode.com provides a highly customizable Virtual Machine Management Platform using Linux, that lets you configure your own server complete with root access, without the burden of a dedicated server's upkeep, maintenance, and co-location fees.
A Linode is similar to these other terms: Linux Virtual Dedicated Computer (a Linux VDS), Linux Virtual Private Server (a Linux VPS), vserver, semi-dedicated, virtual colocation, shared dedicated.
In part, those other technologies are similar, but Linode.com is different...
[edit] What makes a Linode different?
Our Linux Cluster runs User-Mode Linux (UML) for each Virtual Private Server. UML is an open source virtual machine package designed by Jeff Dike. Jeff ported the Linux kernel to run on the kernel itself, just like any other program. Each UML program running is its own Linux machine. UML makes an ideal environment for hosting. UML hosting is new, and we are proud to pioneer its use.
With a Linode you get everything from your own kernel up. For example: Your own kernel, filesystems, devices, to your own applications and tools.
We also host a local mirror of the User-Mode Linux website.
We've built the Linode Platform Manager (LPM), the online control panel that let's you perform every action you would with a physical machine, except well, it's virtual. It's like your PC BIOS and your boot manager rolled into one.
[edit] Points of interest
- Performance
- High performance SuperMicro Xeon servers
- We do not over-commit RAM on the host servers.
- Each machine is split differently to guarantee your CMR (Committed Minimum Rate)
- Each Linode plan shares the host with others in the same plan.
- Distributions
- Ability to choose from multiple distributions at any time, including distributions from vendors such as:
- Fedora
- Red Hat
- Debian
- Gentoo
- Mandrake
- Slackware
- You can have multiple installations at once, but only one may be booted at one time.
- Ability to choose from multiple distributions at any time, including distributions from vendors such as:
- Linux Kernels - Ability to choose from multiple kernels at any time
- Custom Configs - Ability to create, edit, and boot your own custom Configuration Profiles (but only one can run at a time)
- Complete Control - Remote Reboot, Remote Console Access, Remote Desktop, Linode Platform Manager, multiple distributions, reverse dns, etc..
- Instant Upgrades - Add extras like more storage, more IPs, and more RAM to your account in real-time (when available). Means a seamless upgrade path!
- Linux - Plus, all the benefits of having complete ("root") access on your Linode, running your own kernel, with your own distribution
- Install anything you want (within our terms of service agreement)
- No domain limits
- Multiple IP addresses available
[edit] Powerful Engineering
The Linode Linux Cluster uses powerful enterprise class equipment. Each Linode comes with plenty of processing power, burstable to 100% of the host's CPU. By using the Linux kernel scheduler and by limiting the number of Linodes on each host machine, you have a guaranteed share of the resources. With very low contention ratio (with the highest being only 40:1) a Linode can provide maximun processing power.
[edit] Powerful Platform Management
Linode.com is more than just a VDS/VPS, it's a complete Linux Platform Manager. The Platform Manager provides a web based control panel in which you can control every aspect of your Linode. Remote serial console access is available via our SSH console tunneling. You can even watch as your machine boots! Plus, complete root access to your Linode. This provides the independence you need to get your job done.
[edit] Linux Powers It All
You can configure your Linode with our ever-growing selection of distributions and kernels, and switch between different configurations at any time. You can try out that new Debian release, and then reboot back into your Red Hat config (for example).
You can create as many virtual disk drives as you have storage space, allowing you to experiment without needing to mess with your "good" setup. Plus we provide small foot-print rescue distributions like Tom's Root Boot (tomsrtbt), just in case.
