rdiff-backup is pretty neat and well-liked by users so this isn't an attempt to convince otherwise.

I'm just posting a list of other backup tools to consider before I forget because they offer variety.

hdup 1.6 (super-easy daily/weekly/monthly backups, uses non-proprietary format tar.gz/tar.bz2)

dar 2.1.5 (great for cds, once restored a 1.4 terabyte backup)

rsnapshot (uses rsync + hardlinks for efficient 'snapshots', not as mature as dar but very promising and interesting)

bacula (network backup, full-featured/complex, well-documented and appears to be good for those with many machines to backup)

Amanda (network backup to a single large tape, etc.)

If you are in a super-hurry to use a backup tool while you do more research, then hdup 1.6 is a perfect fit (I think the only tool on this list to be more popular than rdiff-backup according to Here ). I didn't have to RTFM in order to do daily/weekly/monthly backups right away (<3 minutes after 'apt-get install hdup'). Now I have more time to properly research other backup tools, such as dar and rdiff-backup.
