Talk:IPv6
From LinodeWiki
- What is Linode's plan for offering native IPv6 to customers? Kjotte 15:41, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
- Word on the street is that at this time, not all of the datacenters offer native IPv6. Until this is not true, native IPv6 will not be forthcoming. Jtsage 15:59, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
- Seems reasonable. Is there anything we as customers can do to encourage those DCs to get their IPv6 ready without becoming annoying to them or Linode?
Just for my own reference, here's all the datacenters and their IPv6 prefixes as determined by HE's BGP tool
| DC | Owner | AS | Prefix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newark | Net Access Corporation | 8001 | 2001:0518::/32 |
| Dallas | ThePlanet | 21844 | 2610:0040::/32 |
| Atlanta | Global Net Access | 3595 | 2604:b900::/36 |
| Fremont | Hurricane Electric | 6939 | 2001:0470::/32 |
| London | Telecity Group | 15830 | 2001:4d78::/32 |

- So, lets vote with our feet. If we don't use Atlanta or London, then Linode won't buy as much rack space from them. Maybe they'll get the point. --BarkerJr 01:53, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
- Does not seem reasonable. They could enable ipv6 everywhere and it just won't work in Atlanta and London. I have a Fremont linode, and arranging a tunnel seems silly when it seems like I should be able to (1) enable ipv6 in my custom kernel (2) prefix my v4 address with something (3) mock those who use teh tunn37z 72.14.180.200 21:17, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
- The word as of 2011-02-03:
<@caker> Ideally, I'd like to wait-and-see what happens over the next 6-12 months and then decide how zomg-urgent IPv6 is
<@caker> if it's freaking crazy and the nets are coming to an end, rest assured we'll be on board in no time
<@caker> otherwise, we'll continue to focus on some badass features we've been brewing up
<Peng> caker: You're probably not going to answer this, but assuming v6 is zomg-urgent but some of the DCs are still lazy about it,
is it within the realm of possibility that you'd roll it out at only the ones that are ready?
<@caker> Peng: absolutely
- The clarification of the word as of 2011-02-04:
<dominikh> checkers: http://www.linode.com/wiki/index.php/Talk:IPv6 bottom of the page, that's the current opinion and status <@caker> also, that's not Linode's stance, that's just my personal opinion <@caker> I reserve the right to announce IPv6 tomorrow. <DephNet[Paul]> caker, Linodes stance is "It is on the todo list", isn't it? <@caker> DephNet[Paul]: hell yes <@caker> We guarantee you that we'll have IPv6 well before it's useful.
- It's here!!!
