[edit] About Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a Debian-based distribution. Initially popular because of its up-to-date GNOME desktop and installation process, based on the then-unreleased-by-Debian debian-installer (which has since been released with Debian "sarge", version 3.1), its userbase has since broadened, thanks in part to partner projects such as Kubuntu and Edubuntu.
Despite its image as a desktop distribution, it is suitable for servers. Since it has a fully supported release every 6 months, it can be a good choice for people who like Debian but don't want to run either an old system (Debian stable) or an unsupported system (Debian testing or unstable). Most settings are not dissimilar to Debian.
