A lot of people ask about upgrading their linode. If you don't want an entirely new plan...

How do I add extra RAM//DISK/XFER/IPs to my Linode account?

Assuming you want a new plan:

The official FAQ entry:

Can I upgrade my Linode to a larger plan at a later time?

Next, details that you won't get there:

First, check the plans page to see if a Linode is available in the size that you want. If it isn't, you won't get to upgrade immediately. If the page says that a linode is available in the size you want, you might get the upgrade right now, depending on whether or not you care if your IP changes. (Read the following paragraph for details) If a linode isn't available in your desired plan right now, go ahead and fill out the support ticket and you'll be put in the queue for the next available.

Will your IP change? Only if you want it to and explicitly say so in your support ticket request. The company assigns linodes to machines based on the plan. 256's go on one machine; 512's go on a different machine, etc. When you change plans, you will change machines. The company operates out of a couple of different data centers. Standard Operating Procedure is to NOT change datacenters for your linode when you upgrade. The number of linodes available at a certain plan level that is given at the link above doesn't take the datacenter into account. So, even if the above link says that a linode is available at the level you desire, you might not get the upgrade immediately. It is best to fill out the support ticket and then you'll find out. If you want to know apriori, you can send email or check on the IRC Channel for an admin and they might be able to tell you.

The actual upgrade process is quite painless. After you've filled out the support ticket you'll get an email response saying that you are ready to actually upgrade. At that point you login to your linode.com account and there will be an option to upgrade your machine. So, you shutdown, upgrade, and when it is done, you bring your linode back up.
