I have a Mandriva 2005 LE VM running on Mandriva 2005 LE. 02:49 < chrish01> wow, people still use mandrake? 02:49 < cilkay> The install script did not create the necessary directories in /var/lib/xen or /var/run/xend 02:49 < chrish01> debian is the same 02:50 < cilkay> yeah, sure, whatever you say:) 02:51 < cilkay> A visit to #debian, where they eat their young, and then a visit to #mandriva will prove that they are NOT the same at all. 02:51 < chrish01> thats fine. i dont need to be in #debian to rip on people :) 02:51 < cilkay> I have little use for the "mine is bigger than your's" attitude of many folks on #debian 02:52 < chrish01> the quality of debian is amazingly beyond the rest. i can easily see why they get big heads from time to time 02:53 < cilkay> No question Debian is a good distro but there are other good distros too. 02:53 < chrish01> depends what you are using them for too. i would never run a server with anything other than debian anymore though. just not worth it 02:54 < cilkay> The people who have big heads are more often the wannabes, not the real gurus. Gurus do not have to remind everyone of how smart they are. 02:54 < chrish01> nod 02:54 < chrish01> your work should speak for you 02:54 < cilkay> Exactly. 02:54 < chrish01> unfortunately, i dont think mandriva's work has shown for them ;-) 02:55 < chrish01> im not big on their admin tools. i think they were a giant step backwards into the linuxconf days 02:55 < cilkay> I've been using Mandrake since the first release. Like any distro, it has its pros and cons. 02:56 < chrish01> i used it from the 6 release to 7.2 02:56 < cilkay> MCC is a gem. The draktools are excellent. I love urpmi. I gained a healthy respect for Mandrake/Mandriva after learning how to package RPMs for MDK and creating my own urpmi repository. 02:56 < chrish01> back when redhat was fucking up big time. then switched to gentoo until around 2001, then to debian shortly after 02:57 < chrish01> i think urpmi was good concept, but it is far from being as a good of tool as apt 02:57 < cilkay> I've used both. I think both have their pros and cons. 02:57 < cilkay> I could live with Debian if I had to, but I don't have to. 02:58 < chrish01> i rarely use gui's. so the lack of good cli tools on mandrake doesnt cut it 02:58 < cilkay> Besides, I will in all likelihood be creating Debian/Ubuntu VMs on this box. 02:58 < chrish01> thats a smart choice. running xen with having apt to bootstrap makes things tons easier 02:58 < cilkay> Huh? MDK has all the cli tools that any other distro has and then some. 02:58 < chrish01> their ncurses stuff sucks 02:59 < cilkay> Well, not *this* box. This is a laptop. The server that I just got running. 02:59 < chrish01> they tried to bridge things to make it like gtk, which was not smart IMO 02:59 < cilkay> I think you're talking about a different distro. 03:00 < chrish01> naw, they *used* to make all the drakconf shit work for both ncurses and gtk 03:00 < cilkay> They still do. 03:00 < cilkay> Works great both ways. 03:00 < cilkay> I've done a remote install of Mandrake on a server in Germany to which I had no physical access or remote hands. 03:00 < chrish01> anyway, i dont like to debate os's. i try not to take the trolls when they come along 03:00 < cilkay> The tools work great if take the time to learn them. 03:01 < chrish01> dude, i remotely changed a redhat 9 box to freebsd 03:02 < cilkay> *dude*, for someone who doesn't feed trolls, you certainly seem to behave like one with your inane comments about "Mandrake, people still use that?" 03:02 < cilkay> Anyway, g'nite. 03:02 < chrish01> that was more of ajoke 03:02 < cilkay> Jokes don't travel well on IRC I'm afraid, esp. if you don't use little smiley thingies. 03:02 < cilkay> Cheers. 03:03 < chrish01> night 03:35 -!- DEac- [~deac@xdsl-84-44-213-133.netcologne.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] 03:46 -!- DEac- [~deac@xdsl-84-44-146-85.netcologne.de] has joined #xen 05:15 -!- knewt [~jmb@p213.54.75.162.tisdip.tiscali.de] has joined #xen 06:01 -!- mejlholm [~mejlholm@port79.ds1-abc.adsl.cybercity.dk] has quit [Quit: Client exiting] 06:10 -!- mejlholm [~mejlholm@port79.ds1-abc.adsl.cybercity.dk] has joined #xen 06:23 -!- yarihm [~yarihm@217-162-204-252.dclient.hispeed.ch] has joined #xen 06:33 -!- rusty [~rusty@ppp60-148.lns1.cbr1.internode.on.net] has joined #xen 06:49 -!- cfreak [cfOFTC@no.real-lif3.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds] 06:58 -!- cfreak [cfOFTC@no.real-lif3.de] has joined #xen 08:10 -!- knewt [~jmb@p213.54.75.162.tisdip.tiscali.de] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer] 08:12 -!- knewt [~jmb@zeus.pimb.org] has joined #xen 08:14 -!- sdague [~sdague@user-0cevegb.cable.mindspring.com] has joined #xen 08:17 -!- knewt [~jmb@zeus.pimb.org] has quit [Remote host closed the connection] 08:18 -!- knewt [~jmb@p213.54.75.162.tisdip.tiscali.de] has joined #xen 08:19 -!- FLORA [~c8f2b101@webuser.thegrebs.com] has joined #xen 08:20 -!- chrish01 [~chrish01@c-24-7-127-192.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 08:25 -!- FLORA [~c8f2b101@webuser.thegrebs.com] has left #xen [] 09:26 -!- yarihm [~yarihm@217-162-204-252.dclient.hispeed.ch] has quit [Quit: This computer has gone to sleep] 09:29 -!- rusty [~rusty@ppp60-148.lns1.cbr1.internode.on.net] has quit [Quit: Client exiting] 10:47 -!- joink [~joink@186.80-202-132.nextgentel.com] has joined #xen 10:50 -!- adrianoc [1000@200141236222.user.veloxzone.com.br] has joined #xen 11:32 -!- Tv [~Tv@GMMDCXLVIII.dsl.saunalahti.fi] has joined #xen 12:23 -!- adrianoc [1000@200141236222.user.veloxzone.com.br] has quit [Quit: Leaving] 12:29 -!- yarihm [~yarihm@217-162-204-252.dclient.hispeed.ch] has joined #xen 12:30 -!- yarihm [~yarihm@217-162-204-252.dclient.hispeed.ch] has quit [Quit: ] 12:35 -!- yarihm [~yarihm@217-162-204-252.dclient.hispeed.ch] has joined #xen 12:44 -!- gpd [~gpd@pool-71-106-24-211.lsanca.dsl-w.verizon.net] has left #xen [] 13:29 -!- tryggth [~tryggth@c-24-19-57-243.hsd1.wa.comcast.net] has joined #xen 13:32 < tryggth> I'm using Xen from Fedora development and everything is going pretty well. Have a FedoraCore3 image running. But I'm having trouble getting the swap file to work. 13:33 < tryggth> I've added disk = ['file:/root/FedoraCore3.img,sda1,w','file:/root/FedoraCore3.swap,sda2,w'] to the configuration file. 13:33 < tryggth> And in /etc/fstab in the domU instance I added a line for the swap file. 13:33 < tryggth> But when I start the domU instance and then check with top the swap file isn't there. 13:34 < tryggth> I like in /dev in the domU instance and though I see /dev/sda1 I don't see sda2. 13:35 < tryggth> I'm thinking it may have something to do with udev not working in dom0 or domU, but that is just a guess. 13:36 < tryggth> The line added to fstab is: /dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0 13:38 < tryggth> Any ideas? I've tried using mknod but I get the feeling that the dev entries are being created during boot. 13:42 < riel> did you mkswap /root/FedoraCore3.swap ? 13:48 < tryggth> Yes. But let me try it again. It did have a slightly unexpected message. 13:50 < tryggth> mkswap return the following two lines: 13:50 < tryggth> Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 524283 kB 13:50 < tryggth> no label, UUID=e8ff9a40-b7fc-49d0-b608-7d00738d94eb 13:51 < tryggth> It was the "nolabel" comment I was thinking about... and that isn't all that unexpected. 13:51 < tryggth> Just ran it and still am not getting the swap file. 13:51 < tryggth> I'm sure its going to be something silly since everyting else is working well. Just can't figure out what it is... 13:51 < tryggth> Hmm. 14:00 < tryggth> I guess I could try figuring it out if I knew how the /dev/sda2 entry is getting set up in the domU filesystem image. 14:00 < tryggth> What is strange is that the /root/FedoraCore3.img file is being used just fine. 14:25 < tryggth> Just tried: xm vbd-create basic file:/root/FedoraCore3.swap sda2 w 14:25 < tryggth> No error message but still no /dev/sda2 created. 14:27 < tryggth> However the log is showing: DEBUG (blkif:63) exception looking up device number for sda2: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/dev/sda2' 14:28 -!- Tv [~Tv@GMMDCXLVIII.dsl.saunalahti.fi] has quit [Quit: Client exiting] 14:33 < tryggth> OK, my mknod was probably wrong in the client image. I changed it to mknod -m 660 sda2 b 8 2 and now when I run the vbd-create message I get an immediate error. 14:34 < tryggth> Error: Creating vbd failed: device (vbd (uname file:/root/FedoraCore3.swap) (dev sda2) (mode w)), error 5 14:49 < tryggth> I have to do more to figure this stuff out before I ask silly questions. Thanks. 14:59 < tryggth> Found the problem. My image didn't have the right xenU /lib/modules.
