Reverse DNS Manager

Oct 22, 2003
by Christopher Aker
Available now off the Member’s Overview page is the Reverse DNS Configuration Manager (look near the “Network Information” button — there is a link to it). It is fairly bare-bones at the moment, but get’s the job done. Requirements Your reverse DNS hostname must first forward resolve to one of your IPs. I couldn’t find […]

Linode selects Hurricane Electric for expansion

Oct 8, 2003
by Christopher Aker
I am very pleased to announce that Linode.com has expanded with new space in Hurricane Electric’s Fremont, CA data center facility. Hurricane Electric is a Tier 1 provider, operating their own world-class national (and UK) backbone with hundreds of peering partnerships. All new host machines (host9 and up) will be located at Hurricane Electric. […]

Network Filtering Improvements

Sep 24, 2003
by Christopher Aker
I deployed new “transparent” network filtering yesterday evening around midnight. The filtering falls into two categories, global filtering and Linode-specific filtering. The global filtering is already activated on all the hosts. This filters most of the broadcast traffic, the HSRP messages, and UDP port 137 traffic. The Linode specific filtering filters broadcast traffic, and ARP […]

Red Hat 8.0 (Small) available

Sep 16, 2003
by Christopher Aker
By the request of a few users, I pulled together a Red Hat 8.0 distro and made it available through the Distro Wizard. It requires 450 megs, but has about 100 free. Once I get some feedback (and I expect to get some) I’ll make any changes and bring the size inline with the actual […]

Custom “root=” kernel param

Sep 4, 2003
by Christopher Aker
Linode.com version 1.0.55 contains the ability to specify a custom “root” kernel param in your Linode Configuration Profile. With the root= kernel param, you can specify an alternate block device. This is useful for (but not limited to) root LVM setups. Valid characters are A-Z, 0-9, _ and / Enjoy! -Chris

initrd support

Sep 3, 2003
by Christopher Aker
You can now create up to a 32 MB uncompressed initrd image, and specify that image in your configuration profile for use as an initrd when your Linode boots. This is helpful in two-phased boot-up procedures, required when using LVM on your root partitions, or perhaps even running distro-upgrade procedures. To create an initrd image, […]

Network Usage Summary update

Aug 26, 2003
by Christopher Aker
I’ve made some changes behind the scenes to eliminate having to click on “Calculate Network Usage” in the Members Control panel. This was a huge resource hog, slowing everything down. The host servers are now updating the monthly cumulative number instead of capturing 60-second snapshots that then have to be calculated together. So, the “Network […]

I’ve been gearing up for a motorcycle trip over Labor Day weekend. A few buddies of mine and I are headed out to the NC/GA/TN border area (Deal’s Gap, Cherohala Skyway, etc). We’re leaving Friday morning the 29th, and returning sometime in the late afternoon on Sunday. Should be about 1000 miles round trip 😀 […]

Gentoo Linux 1.4 distro available

Aug 22, 2003
by Christopher Aker
Gentoo Linux 1.4, available through the Distro Wizard. I “emerged” a Gentoo Linux 1.4 filesystem from stage 3, compiled and optimized for >= Pentium4 (Xeon). I will admit, it might be a little rough around the edges. Feedback would be appreciated. Gentoo Site: http://www.gentoo.org/ Enjoy! -Chris
