Datacenter Operations Specialist

Philadelphia, PA

Linode’s datacenter operations team is responsible for the planning, installation, repairs and upgrades, configuration, and maintenance of Linode’s hardware. Additional responsibilities include maintaining correspondence with datacenter technicians, keeping up with equipment availability levels based on demand, shipping and receiving, deploying new equipment, and retiring depreciated equipment as necessary. The datacenter operations team also plays a crucial role in hardware infrastructure management such as server rack planning, equipment tracking and documentation, software and firmware upgrades, forecasting, etc.

Linode is now seeking an enthusiastic Datacenter Operations Specialist. This person will have a genuine passion for all things hardware and will be well versed in a server environment. The ideal candidate will have NOC experience and will have both hands-on and remote experience maintaining a server environment. This individual will have working knowledge of Linux and computer networking experience.

 Primary Job Functions

  • Continuously monitor and maintain nine worldwide datacenters, networks, and servers
  • Deploy and repair servers, storage systems, routers and switches, and other hardware
  • Interact with datacenter NOCs via telephone, email, web portal, etc.
  • Infrastructure planning in a globally-reaching datacenter environment
  • Respond to demand by shipping and receiving of servers, networking equipment, remote power consoles, etc. to maintain availability and reliability of Linode’s network
  • Ensure peak performance by installing and maintaining firmware and software

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in computer science or equivalent field preferred
  • Experience in a NOC environment with hands-on hardware experience a plus
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and networking equipment
  • Robust troubleshooting skills; preferably in a large-scale datacenter environment

Front End Engineer

As a Front End Engineer at Linode you will work on our open source single page app used by customers like Dark Sky, The Onion and hundreds of thousands of developers like you around the world. IT Technician

Philadelphia, PA

Linode is currently seeking an IT technician to support Linode’s internal infrastructure and systems. You will focus on Linode’s own office network and equipment along with administration of our servers, backups, and IP phone system.  

You will be a proactive troubleshooter and someone who is able to identify needs before they become problems. Impeccable communication skills along with the technical skills to do the job are a must. You will be passionate about IT, quick to grasp new concepts and have a strong desire to help others. In addition, you will thrive in a high-energy environment where you must solve problems and perform work that is routinely done with minimal direct supervision.

This position will report to Linode’s Datacenter Operations Manager. The position is 40 hours per week and may require travel among our Philadelphia PA, Haddonfield NJ, and Galloway NJ offices.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor and maintain Linode's internal office network
  • Administration of internal servers, backups, and IP phone system
  • Responsible for the procurement process for computers, software, and related office equipment
  • Deploy equipment to new employees and fulfill upgrade requests for existing employees
  • Diagnose and repair office equipment, work with vendors or manufacturers for warranty claims
  • Manage Linode’s internal assets and maintain inventory logs
  • Fulfill internal help desk support requests for all Linode employees

Job Requirements

Linux Network Engineer

We are currently seeking a Linux Network Engineer who will collaborate with the team on the engineering, design, configuration, installation, maintenance, and upgrades of the Linode network, helping us architect and scale for our future growth. You will become a key member of our networking team, responsible for keeping Linode's network as reliable and secure as possible.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform basic engineering, design, implementation and maintenance tasks.
  • Design and build data connectivity solutions to support Linode's growth worldwide.
  • Assist with the on-going assessment and upgrade of networks.
  • Assist with network related customer support tickets.
  • Coordinate the installation of hardware such as routers, switches, fiber runs, etc.
  • Write code to manage and monitor our network infrastfucture
  • Maintain knowledge of existing equipment and vendors.
  • Collect and analyze data network statistics.
  • Develop relationships with vendors and investigate sources of equipment and services.

Job Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of network operations.
  • Expert knowledge of Cisco hardware and IOS.
  • Advanced knowledge of servers, switches, routers, and various network services,
  • Advanced knowledge of BGP
  • CCNA certification or better is required.
  • 5 years of network engineering experience is required.
  • Excellent network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills.
  • Expertise with Linux/UNIX, load balancing, firewalls, and traffic analysis.
  • Programming experience is required.
  • Professional problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills (English required, local dialects a plus).
  • 2 years experience in a customer service oriented position preferred.
  • Experience with software network tools such as iptables, Linux IPVS, ExaBGP, and HAProxy.
  • Due to the 24x7 operations, must be able to work a flexible work schedule, perform on-call duties, may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Linux Systems Engineer

Managing a cloud hosting service for 400K customers requires creative solutioning and cutting edge technological innovation.  As we continue to grow rapidly, we’re looking for passionate, highly skilled Systems Engineers to drive automation & operational excellence, and support product development for our customer fleet.  This will require out of the box thinking combined with deep domain expertise on Linux, DevOps, and System Administration to be successful.

Linode’s customer base relies heavily on us to deliver a level of service that is unparalleled in the hosting industry, and that’s where our team of System Engineers comes in. You will be a natural problem solver. Someone who lives to put out fires before they start and continuously monitors all things Linode to make sure there is never a hiccup in the service that our customers come to love and expect. 

Linode Systems Engineers are responsible for working on a number of critical internal and customer facing initiatives.  This includes everything from the creation of distributed file systems like Ceph, Gluster, and Cinder to Salting all the infrastructure and ELKing all the logs.

Our support team is the front-line of Linode’s cloud hosting platform, and is completely dedicated to providing the best support in our industry. When customers say what they love about Linode, “Customer Support” should be at the top of their list. We empower every member of our Customer Support team as not only an employee, but also a customer advocate. Simply possessing the knowledge to do the job isn’t enough; one needs to have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as an equally strong passion for customer service. At the end of the day, our number one goal is making our customers happy.

In this position, you will regularly collaborate with your support colleagues, as well as members of the development, operations, and networking teams. An ideal candidate is someone who can easily switch between independent and collaborative work throughout the day.  This role is a regular 40 hour per week position located in our Philadelphia, PA office. Linode provides 24/7/365 support to our customers, which means candidates should be open to non-traditional shifts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Deliver solutions for our customers via support tickets, email, IRC, and phone
  • Troubleshoot issues related to our Linux cloud hosting platform, product or service inquiries, billing, etc, and provide the best possible update to our customers every single time
  • Identify and escalate recurring issues to system and network engineers, developers or other appropriate parties
  • Handle abuse complaints including Terms of Service infringements, subpoenas, and malicious activity
  • Become familiar with all Linode products and systems
  • Come to work dedicated to making yourself and Linode better than the day before

Requirements

  • Must be within commuting distance to Philadelphia, PA (or able to relocate)
  • Comfortable with navigating the Linux command line
  • Familiarity with common Linux server applications such as Apache2, Nginx, Postfix, MySQL, BIND, etc.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot TCP/IP issues, other networking issues (packet loss, connections timing out / refused)
  • Ability to troubleshoot firewall issues, identifying problematic / misconfigured iptables rules
  • Ability to troubleshoot DNS issues (using dig, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2+ years customer support experience (in a technical field preferably)
  • 2+ years experience with Linux or related technology
  • B.S. in Computer Science or related area of study or equivalent work experience

Project Manager

Summary

Are you interested in the latest and greatest technologies that end users and businesses are using or looking to use in the cloud?  If so, this is a rare opportunity to be part of a winning team  to deliver on these and provide value to these customers.  Linode’s project managers are responsible for the successful deployment of many major customer facing initiatives and products. The tools and technologies that we are working with are cutting edge and require a passionate PM to learn about them and move them forward to production.

We are currently looking for an experienced Project Manager responsible for the coordination, status reporting and execution of critical projects at Linode. Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adaptable to rotation between product development, operations, and marketing, as well as cross-functional projects. This is a highly visible position that will interact at every level internally to facilitate completion and delivery of projects.

The must haves:

  • Prior hands-on knowledge in the use of Project Management methodologies and tools including both Waterfall and Scrum/Agile in both software and infrastructure contexts
  • Balanced business/technical background: sufficient level of technical background to provide highly-credible leadership to technical teams and to be able to accurately and objectively evaluate complex project risks and issues
  • Knowledge of project organization and management including monitoring time and impediments for tasks performed
  • Ability to exercise resourcefulness in addressing new problems
  • Experience preparing, implementing, monitoring, and updating the project plan

Senior Database Administrator (MySQL)

Linode is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to execute on database strategies and take responsibility for database integrity, architecture, modeling, security, and performance tuning for our MySQL databases. This person will play a key role in managing and improving the health and stability of our MySQL instances. This person will will display proficiencies in MySQL administration as well as basic Linux administration in a 24x7 production environment.

You will report directly to Linode’s Chief Operations Officer and would regularly collaborate with Linode’s executive team as well as our team of system engineers. This role requires high level strategizing all the way down to daily implementation and maintenance. This role may include some non-traditional hours when necessary, including a rotating on-call schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Basic Database administration - install, configure, upgrade, and migrate existing databases
  • Serve as an escalation point for any defined database issues regarding performance, security, and ongoing maintenance
  • Automate various DBA tasks
  • Optimization of database performance
  • Devise and implement key constraints to ensure database integrity
  • Work with Linode’s developers and system engineers to troubleshoot and optimize queries and performance bottlenecks for current and future products and services
  • Assist in formalizing and updating database policies, procedures, and technical standards, including disaster recovery planning

Minimum Requirements:

  • MySQL DBA experience in a 24x7 production environment
  • 3-6 years of database management/administration and performance tuning experience

Senior Hardware Engineer

We are currently seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer to drive the continual improvement of Linode’s hardware infrastructure. You will focus on certifying powerful new hardware to make our servers faster and more efficient. You will develop, document, and automate benchmark tests. You will create burn-in testing procedures to make our fleet more reliable. You will be a key contributor to the Linode Datacenter Operations Team in ensuring our hardware is not only running optimally but that our equipment is the fastest on the market. You will also maintain the roadmap for future Linode hardware.

You will be a natural problem solver and adept at automating intricate tasks. You will possess exceptional documentation ability. Impeccable communication skills and attention to detail, along with the technical skills to do the job, are a must. This position will report to Linode’s Datacenter Operations Manager. The position is 40 hours per week and is headquartered in Linode's Philadelphia, PA office but may require travel among Haddonfield, NJ, and Galloway, NJ offices. Occasional travel to our 8 worldwide datacenters and our hardware manufacturers and vendors will also be required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create, perform, and automate benchmarking, compatibility, and burn-in test procedures
