Why 5by5 chose Linode’s cloud for its universal podcast platform, Fireside.fm

Who is Fireside.fm?

As a one-stop shop where anyone looking to podcast can find everything they need, Fireside.fm handles all podcast fundamentals - and a few luxuries.

Fireside's purpose is to help anyone podcast. Period. For as little as $19 per month, Fireside supplies its clients with a raft of tools, including the following:

  • Clean, simple UX through its easily navigable user interface.
  • Dashboard of compiled analytics and stats on the podcast’s performance and popularity.
  • Automation features, like transforming the feed to iTunes-compatible RSS, and scheduling future online publishing dates, that streamline workflow.
  • Existing-podcast importing.
  • Comprehensive, simplified podcast manager.
  • Complementary, interactive website and blog.

After his successful launch of 5by5.tv in 2009, Dan Benjamin founded Fireside with a dedicated team of veteran podcasters in 2015. As Fireside’s slogan declares, “By podcasters, for podcasters. You make the fun, we make it easy.”

In Their Own Words...

“Fireside.fm is a podcast hosting and analytics platform. I started building it about two years ago [2015], based on everything I’d learned building the 5by5.tv infrastructure and stats systems. I realized after about seven years of podcasting full time that the industry needed a great platform that would make it easier for everybody, regardless of their experience level, to podcast.

“There are so many things a podcaster has to do before they publish a show, and many of those things can (and should) be automated. And afterwards, it’s important to be able to check your stats, see how many people have downloaded your show — right away — and keep track of how your shows perform. Fireside is all of this and more, and represents more than two years of my full-time attention and work.

“I’d had experience with Linode from running our podcast network 5by5.tv, so when it came time to launch Fireside, I knew Linode would be the right cloud host.

“The biggest challenge for me starting out was not knowing exactly how quickly we’d need to ramp up our service and our servers. I never wanted to be in a situation where I’d be scrambling to find resources, or struggling with a way to quickly deploy new servers. Linode makes all of this so easy, with the ability to create images and clones, while also making it so easy to grow through upgrading servers.

“And those upgrades really are easy. For example, we have several caching servers serving the websites and RSS feeds for our customers. These all live behind a NodeBalancer, which makes upgrading them easy. We can bring one down to run an upgrade without any concern about a service interruption.

“The very nature of Linode made this possible. I was able to build out our entire infrastructure, the entire multiple Ruby on Rails app servers, primary and secondary database servers, caching servers, node balancers, all with incredible speed and knowing I could add more anytime. And as our client base has grown, I’ve been able to do just that — upgrading and adding servers as there was demand, but not before, so I’ve never wasted any money or resources.

“I can tell you that, having used other services in the past with other businesses, the ease with which we can deploy a new stack with Linode is amazing. Logging in to the web console for the deployment and activation of a new server now only takes moments, instead of hours or days as is typical with other providers. Linode is ready to go as quickly as I am.

“I knew we’d need a company that could provide and support the latest, greatest versions of Linux that we wanted to run, while at the same time being able to scale up regardless of our specific needs — but it had to be affordable and fast.
This was Linode!”
