How do I shutdown my server without powering it off?

I want to shutdown my server but I want to keep it powered on. How can this be done?

You'll first want to make sure that our watchdog agent, Lassie, has been disabled for your server.

Once it's disabled, you can launch your server's console screens, login to your server, and shutdown your server using the "shutdown now" command.

https://www.linode.com/docs/platform/manager/using-the-linode-shell-lish/#use-a-web-browser
shutdown now

To restart your server, you can enter the "boot" command from your server's console screen.

boot

How does that differ from powering it off?
