How do I transfer my domain to a different registrar?

Linode Staff

Hello,

I would like to transfer my domain to another domain registrar. How can I do this?

In order to change your registered domain from one registrar to another, you'll first need to find the domain transfer requirements of the destination registrar.

Your destination registrar's website should have a page listing the requirements to transfer your domain, often including things such as length of ownership, temporarily removing privacy protection, unlocking the domain, updating name servers, etc. You'll need to make sure all of these requirements are met in order for your transfer to be processed.

One thing you'll need from your current registrar is your AuthInfo Code (Also called EPP or Auth Code.) Your registrar assigns this code to your domain upon registration, and your destination registrar will need it in order to complete the transfer.

In case you need help in determining who your current registrar is, you can run the whois command with your domain in a terminal, and look for the line that says "Registrar:"

For example:

whois linode.com
Domain Name: LINODE.COM
Registry Domain ID: 94382922_DOMAIN_COM-VRSN
Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.name.com
Registrar URL: http://www.name.com
Updated Date: 2016-12-19T22:36:10Z
Creation Date: 2003-01-26T00:03:21Z
Registry Expiry Date: 2025-01-26T00:03:21Z
Registrar: Name.com, Inc.
Registrar IANA ID: 625
Registrar Abuse Contact Email: abuse@name.com
Registrar Abuse Contact Phone: 7202492374
Domain Status: clientTransferProhibited https://icann.org/epp#clientTransferProhibited
Name Server: NS1.LINODE.COM
Name Server: NS2.LINODE.COM
Name Server: NS3.LINODE.COM
Name Server: NS4.LINODE.COM
Name Server: NS5.LINODE.COM
DNSSEC: unsigned
URL of the ICANN Whois Inaccuracy Complaint Form: https://www.icann.org/wicf/
>>> Last update of whois database: 2019-07-03T16:39:06Z <<<

You can see that the registrar for linode.com is Name.com, Inc

You can also use publicly available websites such as https://whois.icann.org/ to perform a WHOIS lookup.

Once you have met all of the requirements and have your Auth Code, you'll need to ask your destination registrar to perform the transfer. Most registrars can take up to 7 days to complete the transfer of a domain.

hello, I followed all the steps you have told me and I just need to get the authorization key, but I do not know where you get it in linode

Hey @geyezheng

There appears to be a small amount of confusion relating to the service we provide.

Linode is not a registrar, so you cannot transfer ownership of a domain from your current registrar to Linode.

Linode hosts name servers that you can tell your registrar to use instead of their own for distributing your DNS zone information. The benefit of using our name servers is that you can configure your zone info via the Manager.

I'm including a link to our DNS Manager guide that may help to illustrate the use cases for hosting your Domain name servers with Linode.
