Apt update/upgrade for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Linode Staff

Periodically I SSH into my Linode and do an apt update and apt upgrade. The last several times however, there hasn't been any updates? Is the LTS done?

As Ubuntu 14.04 was released five years ago, it reached the end of long term support (LTS) in April 2019. Although you can still install packages from the repositories in /etc/apt.sources.list, there are no security and maintenance updates unless you take advantage of the paid Extended Security Maintenance (ESM) feature.

Otherwise, if you upgrade to 16.04 LTS and then again to 18.04 LTS (one at a time, in order, to help avoid unexpected issues), you won't have to worry about this again until April 2023.
