Linux noob and im totally lost

Ok so im setting up my server to run on the Ubuntu desktop environment. However I need my desktop to look more like this

But mine is currently looking like this.

Im running this server through Putty and VNC viewer. im running ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Whenever I use the command "sudo apt-get install unity" in the terminal and in the Putty console It just says its already updated to the newest version. Another thing I dont understand is why I dont have anything at the top right hand side of my screen like the "log off" button or the Side panel with all the icons as seen in the first picture (the second picture is literally my ENTIRE server box) I feel like im missing something.

Gnome 2 used to run nice on Ubuntu, locally or remotely. Then the Gnome team came out with 3, I never ran 3 much. Canonical came out with Unity. Until 14, it ran OK remotely but they changed things. You might have better luck with Xfce desktop environment.
