VNC Viewer Terminal Issue

So I am using this guide to help me configure a desktop:

Rather than getting a terminal window as shown in the picture, I get a grayish screen with (I forget what it said (about 5-10 words on one line but nothing I thought to be significant so I think a welcome message?)) practically nothing significant on it. There was no terminal for me to write input for the terminal at all. Anyone have any idea what's going on?
