I am having a problem with updating Wordpress & Plugins
I have made the following changes through ssh. But I still cannot update my WordPress core files and plugins.
chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/mywebsite
Please help.

It may not be an answer to your problem but you shouldn't need to set both owner and group to www-data, just owner – I have ownership as www-data:root and WordPress (and associated) updates fine via the Admin panel.
You might want to look at your web server log files to see if there's any additional information to help diagnose…
