Outdated binaries: need restart?

re: Ubuntu 20

I just did an apt update/upgrade.

I then did needrestart.

I get this:

User sessions running outdated binaries:
 xxx @ session #4169: sshd[467295]
xxx @ user manager service: systemd[467298]

Do I need to do a restart of the server? Or should I just forget it?

Do you have a tmux or screen session running?

I don't have tmux running… unless the iterm program (on Mac) started it. I don't see it via "ps -aux".

I don't have 'screen' running.

I've never used either of these… never had a need to have multiple terminal sessions going.

I did "exit" from the ssh session and re-logged back in and re-ran "needrestart." It said that "dbus" needed to be re-started and I said "Ok" but it didn't happen. I'm not going to worry about it.

xxx@yyyyyy:/var/www/html$ sudo needrestart
[sudo] password for anc1:

Restarting services...
 /etc/needrestart/restart.d/dbus.service
Failed to restart dbus.service: Operation refused, unit dbus.service may be requested by dependency only (it is configured to refuse manual start/stop).
See system logs and 'systemctl status dbus.service' for details.

No containers need to be restarted.

No user sessions are running outdated binaries.

Thanks.

Ok just wanted to double check on that since I have that with the one server I run and use tmux.

Glad everything is cleared up.

I'd restart… Since ssh(1)/sshd(8) rely on TLS (which may have been upgraded)…you need to keep anything that depends on crypto as current as possible. Also, all of Linux is just a thin wrapper around systemd(1) these days so you need to keep it up to date as well.

@stevewi

I took your advice and rebooted. I re-ran "needrestart' and there were no more messages about binaries.

Thanks. I'm not sure what those of us with only a year or so of Linux administration would do without you and other mega-experienced system admins here!

I’ve gotten plenty of much needed help on the Linode IRC channel too. Sometimes that’s helpful when you need a faster response.

Linode IRC channel

Wow… I didn't know IRC was still used. I've not used it for about 15 years when I left Debian desktop for the Apple platform. I'll check out what IRC clients are available for macOS and find a tutorial on how to get on to Linode's IRC channel. I've forgotten everything about IRC.

UPDATE: I found this: https://webchat.oftc.net/?channels=linode

It works!

You probably want to restart if your kernel image gets upgraded as well.
