I found that sometimes when I create a new linode, I can't ping it successfully.

SOCKS5/Shadowsocks does not support ICMP…only TCP and UDP. ping is an ICMP Echo request.

I suggest you try something like httping… It (generally) works like ping but uses a TCP connection (so SOCKS5/Shadowsocks will proxy it) and takes a URL as input. See:

https://linux.die.net/man/1/httping

It's an installable package on most (common) Linux distros…as well as *BSD, macOS, and Windoze.

What is an SSR VPS?

If ICMP echo requests (aka pings) are timing out, it means one of two things:

  • the networking on your Linode is not configured correctly; or
  • your firewall is blocking ICMP (a supremely bad idea).
