Help needed setting up a linode. Ubuntu/SSH/SCP/scripting

I have a Linode up and running, to do backups via SCP, but this was only a proof of concept and we are having a few problems. I am looking for somebody to help me fix these problems. This can be done by fixing the current install or by re-installing.

I was thinking of putting the job on RentACoder or Elance, but decided to give the Linode comuntity a first bash at it (as they will not ask me 'what is a linode?') So first of all I am willing to pay (once it works) and I have a more detailed description available.

I have some knowledge of Linux and Linode but for me to research and fix the current install will take weeks, while I have other stuff to do, so I would rather have somebody take this off my shoulders and probably do it in a few days. I will however want to know how it works afterwards, so I can maintain it myself.
