High IO, possible causes?

A few days ago I noticed my Linode was having a strange behaviour and the IO graph showed really worrying spikes. I wonder how can I detect what is the cause of these spikes.

The Linode is used to host several WordPress blogs, and has Debian 6.0, Nginx, PHP5-FPM and MySQL on it.

Any ideas?

Swapping? Check your linode graphs they can tell you if you're swapping a lot. Installing munin is also helpful it creates lots of useful graphs.
