Have a MySQL 911 - Will pay for help tonight

I hope someone with experience and free time sees this:

Debian 8.x server

MySQL

Nginx.

Nothing fancy outside of LEMP except fail2ban… pretty straight forward.

Running a few WordPress sites. Today, they all began giving "error establishing database connection" messages. I've been Googling and searching and trying all kinds of stuff. Can't get it working. I can restart MySQL and a site will load, but it's very slow, and then moments later the database error resurfaces.

I'm out of my league on this - never had it happen before.

**** UPDATE *****

It looks like I had some bad tweaks in my my.cnf file, but for whatever reason, they'd been fine for 3 months, and just blew up today. Whatever. Thanks anyone for looking!
