Out of Curiosity - why would anyone run a gopher server?

Isn't this furry critter on the verge of extinction after having evolved into a much more successful species, HTTP?

I remember using gopher when I was a student back at UNF. It must have been the first web browser.

I looked into it last year for a presentation I made at a convention. There are actually a few gopher servers left.
