What is the best way to make a FREE backup of my Linode?

Linode Staff

I don't need automatic backups and just want to take a snapshot of my Linode for free. Is that something you offer? How do I do it?

While we think our Backups Service offers great value, I totally understand why one might not need something so robust and rather opt for a quick and free solution.

We do not have a free tier of our Backups Service, so in this case I think copying your disk over SSH would be the best option. We have a helpful guide here to walk you through the process but in short, this is a simple method for you to copy your entire Linode over to your home computer, or to another server.

If you're looking to make this a recurring backup, using rsync might be the way to go. We have a guide on manual and automatic backups with rsync here.

Lastly, if you just want to copy a few important files, using the Secure Copy Protocol (SCP) is going to be a fast and straightforward solution. For all the necessary commands and syntax check out our guide here.

I hope this helps!

If your data is worth $0, why even bother backing up?

Backup is very important. Because your data is worthful. SO avail above best service of Linode for Backup Purposes.
