How can I make an offsite backup of my Linode?

I'd like to download an image of my Linode that I can use later on another Linode. How can I do this?

You can download a copy of your Linode's disk over SSH using the guide in the Docs section here:

Copying a Disk Over SSH

The first half of the guide will walk you through the steps of creating the offsite backup, and the second half of the guide will detail the steps needed to upload the disk to a new Linode and boot from it.

Additionally, if you're looking for a solution for replication, you may consider using 1 of the 3 Disk Images allotted for your account. Once you've taken a snapshot (less than 2GB), you can deploy the image to any number of Linodes:

Guide to Linode Images

Linode Images are free of charge and don't require any active Linodes, so if you're looking for a long-term solution this may be the way to go.

Hi, @thorner good day. Can i ask if i can use the backup to a non linode? I mean a local machine or in a vmware?
