How do I remove a Linode but keep a backup?

Is there a way to shut down a machine for a long period of time (months/years) but maintain some type of backup of it for future use?

There's no out-of-the-box way to do this for your Linode just yet, but there are certain workarounds you can use.
For example, you can copy your disk via SSH in order to preserve your data on your local machine. This way, you have a full clone of your disk should you ever want to restore your Linode.
You could also simply copy all the files over via FTP. I would recommend you use a tool such as Filezilla.
Alternatively, you can copy the disk or files over to our new Block Storage service if you'd like to keep it in the cloud. Here's how to use block storage with your Linode. You would follow the same instructions as copying the disk via ssh, but copy it locally to the block storage device instead.
