Recurring Error Establishing DB connection

I have low traffic site I host and once a month I add new content. Often I initially get the Error, sometimes I don't. In any case the site is running fine but unable to log in as admin.

I reboot the server and error goes away.

What would be logical troubleshooting steps? My first thought is to check the error logfiles (wherever they are) and also review the config for PHP.

Suggestions appreciated before I dive in.

Centos 7, all updates applied, Mariadb is 5.5 (ouch). I am not sure how original repository setup I did (wasn't paying attention)

I would mention what application you are you running. Is it WordPress, Joomla, something else?

I would look at some of the sites here and see if you can find some reason the connection is failing.
