On Monday, October 18, 2021, all newly-created Linodes will have reverse DNS set to their new domain by default.

We have written a guide that covers all the details of these new domains. We have also included an example of the changes below. → →

In the future, we will be phasing out and and will stop serving records for those domains for new Linodes and NodeBalancers. At that point, you will no longer be able to access or use your Linodes and NodeBalancers using or, respectively, and will be required to use your new domain on

Until then, all Linodes on and forward records will continue to work.

Why are we doing this?

This change will help improve our overall platform security by restricting cookie domain scopes to prevent sensitive cookies from being read from attacker-controlled origins, improving our vulnerability disclosure program by further clarifying which assets are in scope, lowering the potential for phishing attacks, and improving overall asset tracking and management. In addition, there are currently more than 2 million websites on and indexed by Google, potentially harming search rank.
